Welcome to Anna Japana!
Hi, I’m Anna — a Japanese artist based in Melbourne. I’m completely in love with mizuhiki, a traditional Japanese craft made from paper cords.
For about ten years, I sewed baby bibs using Japanese fabrics — a creative outlet that started from a personal place and grew into something I shared with others. I loved making things with my hands, but eventually, I felt the need to create something more original — something that really expressed my own style and heritage.
That’s when I discovered mizuhiki — and I was instantly fascinated. I ordered books and hundreds of cords from Japan and started teaching myself the techniques. The more I learned, the more connected I felt — to my culture, to my creativity, and to this beautiful craft.
Mizuhiki has been a part of Japanese tradition for centuries — often seen on gift envelopes for weddings and other special occasions. However, with digital payments and fewer formal ceremonies, the craft is slowly fading away. I want to help keep it alive and reimagine its potential.
To me, mizuhiki is more than just a tradition. It’s a way to express stories, emotions, and identity through delicate and thoughtful design. I love combining Japanese materials with inspiration from Australian plants and animals to create unique pieces that reflect a blend of both culture and who I am.
Since 2020, I’ve been running earring-making workshops, and it’s been so rewarding to see people connect with mizuhiki for the first time. Recentry, more locals are recognizing it too, which is amazing! I want to build on that curiosity and bring mizuhiki to more people around the world.
In 2025, I’ll be creating a new collection as part of the City of Casey Emerging Artist Creative Hub Residence, continuing my journey of blending cultures, creativity, and connection.
Whether you’re here to shop, learn, or simply explore, I’m so glad you’re here.
